Mobile proxy vs residential proxy: the real differences
Four proxy types, one honest comparison — including the cases where each of them is the wrong choice.
The short answer
A mobile proxy exits through a carrier CGNAT IP shared by thousands of real phones — the highest-trust exit type there is. A residential proxy exits through a home ISP IP: still well trusted, and available in far more locations at once. The right pick comes down to your target and your budget — trust per IP versus breadth per dollar.
The four proxy types, defined
Every proxy forwards your traffic through someone else's IP. What separates the types is whose IP that is.
Mobile proxies
Route traffic through a phone's cellular connection, so the exit IP belongs to a mobile carrier. Thanks to carrier-grade NAT, thousands of real phones sit behind each public IP — which is exactly why services treat these IPs so carefully. The most trusted exit type, and historically the most expensive to rent.
Residential proxies
Use IPs assigned to home broadband connections, usually sourced from consumer devices whose owners opted into (or were bundled into) a peer-to-peer network. Widely trusted, available across many countries and cities at once, and almost always metered per gigabyte.
ISP (static residential) proxies
Datacenter-hosted servers whose IPs are registered under a consumer ISP. You get datacenter speed and stability with a residential-looking address — a middle ground that works well when you need one fixed, long-lived IP rather than rotation.
Datacenter proxies
Plain servers in a cloud or hosting facility. Fast, cheap, and abundant — but their IP ranges are publicly known to belong to hosting companies, so any target that cares about traffic quality can spot and filter them trivially.

Which proxy type should you use?
When residential is the better pick
You need many rotating locations at the same time — fifty cities, a dozen countries — or you're running a scraping job so large that per-GB pricing across a big network beats operating hardware. One mobile proxy is one carrier in one place; residential networks trade some per-IP trust for enormous breadth.
When datacenter is the better pick
The target doesn't care who you are: public APIs, your own infrastructure, sites without aggressive filtering. Datacenter proxies are the fastest and cheapest option, and paying a trust premium for a target that never checks is wasted money.
When mobile wins
The most bot-hostile services on the internet: social platforms and mobile-first apps, anything that fingerprints aggressively. Managing accounts that must look like real phone users, and verifying mobile ads exactly as a subscriber on that carrier would see them. Where one flagged IP costs you an account, the trust of a carrier IP is the whole game.
Why mobile IPs get treated so gently: CGNAT
Mobile carriers have far fewer public IPv4 addresses than subscribers, so they run carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT): thousands of phones share each public IP, and the carrier reshuffles who gets which address every time a phone re-attaches to the network. From the outside, one mobile IP is thousands of ordinary customers — commuters, shoppers, someone's grandmother checking the weather.
That changes the math for anyone running an anti-bot system. Blacklist a datacenter range and you inconvenience nobody real. Blacklist a carrier IP and you lock out thousands of paying users at once — so services rate-limit, challenge, or simply tolerate mobile traffic instead of banning it. It also means the address on your proxy today was a real subscriber's yesterday and will be another's tomorrow: mobile IPs carry no long memory. None of this makes a mobile IP a license to break a site's rules — it just means the IP itself starts from the highest trust baseline any proxy can offer.

Mobile vs residential questions
Is a mobile proxy always better than a residential proxy?
No. Mobile IPs carry the most trust, but a mobile proxy exits through one carrier in one location. If your job needs fifty cities at once, or you're scraping at a scale where per-GB residential pricing beats running phones, residential is the right tool. Mobile wins where trust matters more than breadth.
Are mobile proxies slower than residential or datacenter proxies?
Often, yes — you're limited by real cellular radio conditions, and 4G/5G throughput varies by carrier, signal, and time of day. Datacenter proxies will always win a raw speed test. Do mobile proxy IPs rotate?

What about IPv6 — do mobile proxies support it?
Dual-stack IPv4 + IPv6 is supported end to end where the carrier provides it. Some carriers hand phones both address families, some only one; when v6 isn't available the proxy simply serves v4, with no Wi-Fi leak either way.
